Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was an influential American artist and one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement. Born in New York City, he studied at Ohio State University, where he also later taught. Lichtenstein rose to fame in the 1960s with works inspired by comic strips and advertising, characterized by his distinctive graphic style using flat colors, bold outlines, and his signature Ben-Day dots, mimicking commercial printing techniques.
Among his most iconic works are Whaam! (1963), Drowning Girl (1963), and Look Mickey (1961), which reflect his fascination with mass culture and challenge traditional views of art. Lichtenstein blurred the line between high art and popular culture, questioning ideas of originality, authorship, and the role of art in society.
His artworks are housed in the permanent collections of many major museums, including:
Throughout his career, Lichtenstein continued to evolve, creating reinterpretations of works by artists like Monet, Picasso, and Matisse. He passed away in New York in 1997, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape contemporary art.
