Banksy is a British street artist whose identity remains unknown. It is believed he was born in Bristol, England, around 1974, but no confirmed information exists about his real name. Since the late 1990s, Banksy has become a defining figure in contemporary art, known for his distinctive style and provocative social commentary.
He primarily uses stencil techniques, allowing for quick execution in public spaces. His work often delivers powerful critiques of social, political, and economic systems, addressing themes such as authoritarianism, war, consumerism, climate change, inequality, and abuse of power.
Banksy has left his mark on walls, streets, and buildings in cities worldwide, including London, New York, Jerusalem, and Paris. Some of his most iconic works include Girl with Balloon, Flower Thrower, There Is Always Hope, and the murals on the West Bank barrier.
Despite his anonymity, Banksy has achieved global fame. In 2010, he directed the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Many of his works have been removed from public spaces and sold at auction for millions—ironically, a practice Banksy has openly criticized.
His projects extend beyond street art, including the satirical theme park Dismaland (2015) and The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem (2017), which faces the separation wall between Israel and Palestine.
Banksy’s work has not only revolutionized urban art but also raised important questions about the value of art, ownership, protest, and freedom of expression.
