Horst Antes was born in Heppenheim in 1936. From 1957-1959, he studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under HAP Grieshaber. In 1959, he received the art prize of the city of Hanover and in 1961 the “Junger Westen” art prize of the city of Recklinghausen. In 1963 he received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo in Rome.
From 1967-1973 and since 1984 Horst Antes has taught as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe
In 1991, his work was awarded the Grand Prize at the Sao Paulo Biennial.
He was one of the first of the younger generation of painters to leave behind the Art Informel and Tachism of the 1950s and develop a new figurative pictorial language. The invention of the “cephalopod” became a distinguishing feature of Antes’ art.
He lives in Berlin and Tuscany/Italy.
