Nagelkreuz Hell by Günther Uecker, Edition of 35. Bronze, hand pantinated
Günther Uecker is a renowned German artist known for his unique works that represent a fusion of painting, sculpture and installation. Born in 1930 in Wendorf, Germany, Uecker achieved international fame as a co-founder of the artist group “ZERO,” which played a significant role in the development of the European postwar avant-garde.
Uecker’s best-known works are his “nail reliefs,” in which he attaches nails in regular patterns to wooden panels or canvases. These works demonstrate a fascinating tension between order and chaos as well as a play with light and shadow. The effect of his nail work varies depending on the angle and incidence of light, creating a dynamic visual experience.
In addition, Uecker also devoted himself to gestural painting and working with other materials such as sand, paper and wire. His artistic work is often inspired by spiritual and philosophical themes, exploring questions of time, space and existence.
Over the course of his long career, Günther Uecker received numerous awards and honors, including the renowned Praemium Imperiale for Fine Arts. His works can be found in major museums and collections around the world and have had a lasting influence on the contemporary art scene.
