“The great lightness” by Lilau, stone sculpture, unique piece
Lilau’s sculptures are dedicated to bodies. In their strong abstraction, they are less reminiscent of human figurines than of organically grown forms.
The artist works with stone, wood and metal. Often large, always grounded, many of his sculptures rise slenderly towards the sky, while others, as compact structures, are content to remain close to the ground. Mostly intended for outdoor use, they enter into direct contact with the surrounding nature and the man-made objects in their environment. Lilau’s works have their own anatomy and thus follow an order created by the artist himself.
The play of light and shadow not only changes the surfaces of the sculptures and their various materials, but also encourages the viewer to change position and view them from all sides. It is important to the artist to take the surrounding space into consideration when creating his works.
